当ブログの記事「漢字タトゥー図鑑」の英訳版を英語圏のソーシャル・ニュースサイトで発見！

アクセス解析を見ていると、英語圏のソーシャル・ニュースサイトであるdigg.comから、ちらほらアクセスがあることに気づいた。当ブログの記事は、英語ソースを単純に訳したものにはなっていない。だが多くの記事については、英語ソースが確かに存在する。なのに、当ブログの記事が英訳されて、英語圏のソーシャル・ニュースサイトに掲載されているというのは実に不思議な話に見える。

参照元を突き止めて納得。ずいぶん前に読者の方から提供された写真を元にして書いた「海外のお馬鹿な漢字タトゥー図鑑」の記事が英訳されていたのである。そして、その英訳が素晴らしく上手い。“原著者”である私の意図を完全に汲み取っていることに驚かされた。

私は翻訳を生業として十数年になるが、その内訳は英語から日本語だけでなく、日本語から英語への翻訳も多い。通常、日本語から英語への翻訳は、日本人訳者ではなく英語ネーティブの訳者の仕事となる。だが、原文の日本語に不備が多い場合は日本人訳者の方が有利になることもある。だから、私のところに舞い込んで来る英訳対象文献には、かなり難解なものや支離滅裂な文章のものが少なくない。

私の書いた文には不備や非論理的な部分が少なかったから訳しやすかったのだ・・・と鼻を高くしてもあまり意味がないわけだが、せっかく英訳してくれたので、ここでは「海外のお馬鹿な漢字タトゥー図鑑」を日英併記にして再掲してみたい。

オリジナルの記事では表組みを使っていたのだが、ブログのレイアウトを変更した関係で少し見づらくなっている。そこで表組みなしの書式に変更した。枠に囲んで英文を示す

“うなじ”は普通ひらがな表記だが、漢字を当てると“項”である。しかし、このタトゥーは“項”ではなく、頑固の“頑”である。そもそも、うなじにわざわざ“うなじ”というタトゥーを入れるのも馬鹿げている。何を今さら度満点である。

それとも、頑固の“頑”を意図して彫ったのか？　だとしたら、この女性は、頑な人なんだろう。

'unaji' (the word for 'nape of the neck') is usually written in hiragana, but the correct Chinese character would be '項' [not the character on the girl's neck]. But this tattoo uses the character from the left side of the compound for 'stubborn'. In the first place, it's pretty idiotic that she's gone to the trouble of deliberately getting the word for 'nape of the neck' tattooed there. Full points for total incredulity.

And what if, indeed she intended to get the left side of 'stubborn' tattoed (this character means 'hard'). Well, yeah, then she's probably a pretty hard-headed girl.

ひょっとしたら仏教用語か何かと思ってググって見たがヒットなし。さては、漢字に詳しいと吹聴しているインチキ彫り氏に「金持ちになるタトゥー」を入れてくれとでも頼んだのだろうか？　

キャッシュ（ゲンナマ）がたくさん転がり込んでくるようにということで“現生”と入れるべきところを逆順で彫ってしまったのだろうか？

At first glance I thought this was some sort of special Buddhist jargon, but after another look I still came up blank. Well then, perhaps this person asked some fraud of a tattoo artist who claimed to be an expert on Chinese characters to give them a 'I'm going to get rich' tattoo? Perhaps he intended get tattooed with the word 'gen-nama', one way of saying 'cash', in the hope that loads of it would fall into his hands. However the tattoo artist got the order of the two characters backwards...

まず、写真に映っているのが背中なのか、腰なのかがはっきりしない。腰だとしたら写真の向きが上下逆になっているということになる。しかし、よく見れば、これは背中のようだ。

つまり、漢字が全部上下逆になっている。で、「永遠家名誉」と書かれているわけだが、これはなんとなく、元の英語を想像できそうだ。"family's honor”が“forever”だとかなんとか言いたいのだろう。

やーさんぽい刺青だから、その場合、familyというのはギャング一家のことかもしれない。

We can't exactly tell from the picture whether the tattoo is on the person's back, or hips. If it's the hips, then the characters are upside down; but if you look closely, you can tell it's really the back.

Well, all these characters are upside down and backwards. It says 'forever house honor', but we can more or less imagine what the original English was:
'family honor is forever' something, something, and so on and so forth, was probably what he wanted to say. It looks like a yakuza-style (or gang) tattoo, so if that's the case, 'family' probably refers to the guy's gang...

これ何と読むのだろう？　なんとなく「中学」に見える。本当に中学でいいのだろうか？　ひょっとすると中国の略体漢字を使っているのかもしれないが、そうでない限り、日本人は中学としか見てくれないぞ。

So, how do we read this? It looks pretty much like 'middle school'. Did this person really mean to get 'middle school' tattooed on them? Ah, but maybe it's the simplified Chinese for 'china'; but as long as that isn't the case/ in any case, Japanese people will only be able to see 'middle school'.

このたおやかな曲線は、おそらく女性のウエスト部分だろう。かすかなエロスが漂っているかもしれない。だがしかし、なんでここに“星”の字を彫る必要があるのだ？　『巨人の星』って英語化されてるのだろうか？

いや待てよ。これも冒頭の「うなじ」と同じことかもしれない。“こし”と入れようとして、“ほし”を入れたのではないか？

This one with its lithe, curving line is probably a woman's waist. There is some erotic aspect to it no doubt. But, but what need could there possibly be for getting 'star' tattooed here? Perhaps she's English-ifying 'Star of the Giants' (an old anime series)? No,no wait a minute, this is just like the 'nape of the neck' tattoo at the top of the page, I bet. She meant to get 'koshi' (hips), but ended up with 'hoshi' (star), right?

なんじゃこりゃ？　イルカの絵に「息子」の文字。よほど実の息子を愛しているとでも？　だが息子さんからしたら、お父ちゃん（あるいはお母ちゃん？）がこんなタトゥー彫った日には、超が付くほど“ありがた迷惑”なのではないか。

イルカの絵と関連づけて考えるに、別の意味の“息子”かもしれん。しかし、男性が自分のイチモツを指すときに使われた“息子”という隠語は、もはや死語と化しているのではないか？

What the heck is this?? The characters for 'son', next to a picture of a dolphin. Perhaps is really a symbol of his love for their son? However, from the son's response to this was probably just a huge 'thanks for nothing!', the day dad (or mom perhaps?) got this tattooed on them.

But if we think about it in connection with the dolphin, there might be a different meaning for 'son'. Perhaps he's using 'son' as a slang reference to his 'thing' - but this is a usage is quickly dying out... (not 100% on the last sentence)

“おどろおどろしい”とでも形容すべきか。文面は禁断の香りに満ちているのだが、文字のでかさと上腕三等筋の組み合わせにぎょっとさせられる。

あなたが弟のいる女性だとして、ある日、弟がこんな刺青を入れて現れたら、どう思います？　嬉しいですか？　やっぱり、これまた超ありがた迷惑じゃありませんか？

This ought to be taken as a metaphor for 'truly awful'. On the surface this one smells strongly of some forbidden forbidden fruit, but the size of the characters and their placement on the triceps on the upper arm only add to the rather startling effect. If you are a woman with a younger brother, if said younger brother appeared one day with this tattoo, what would think?! Would you be happy? Yeah, this one is also definitely a huge 'thanks for nothing'. (note: this is probably meant to be 'dearest older sister', but the impression it leaves is decidedly more... incestuous.)
